Weather conditions were almost perfect on the day, sunny, a light sea breeze and just enough swell to make it interesting round the back of the island, where taking a short cut can risk a capsize.
There were 26 entries in the main race, mainly from local clubs, but we did have about 8 people from the deep south who came as well.
The other classes were contested mainly by Coquet Canoe Club junior members.

Our age categories continue to expand upwards. The race was won by George Oliver, now a ‘Grand Old Man’ (over 55). There were 5 paddlers in this age group, one in the ‘Old Man of the Sea’ – (over 65) group, and, as usual, Paul Burgess of Hexham Canoe Club, in a class of his own at the age of 80 – an ‘Ancient Mariner’ (over 75).

There were 9 SuperVets (over 45), including Pat Jones, one of only 2 female competitors in this class, the other being the only Junior, Emma Stewart.

Three seakayaks did the shorter race to the island, won by 19 yr old Kevin Alsey, closely followed by 15 yr old Peter Hanmer. Rebecca Beal was the first Slalom boat to finish on this course, but credit should be given to 15 yr old Robert Williams who did it in a very short plastic boat in a respectable time.

The Junior race was won again by Ross Martin. Luckily for other competitors, he will be too old for this race next year! 10 year old Cameron Lord did extremely well, particularly as he has not been paddling for very long.

We had a new trophy to award this year. One of our club members, Rab Beal, died last year. He had competed in the race in early years, then went to help run the safety cover for many years. His son and daughter, Robert and Rebecca, had competed several times in the Junior event.
The Rab Beal trophy was presented by his family, and goes to the Coquet Canoe Club Junior paddler with the best result. It was presented to Ross Martin. Rebecca was also racing in memory of her father.

The date of next year’s race is Sunday June 29th . Start time will be 11am.

Hope to see you there, it will be the 20th Round the Island Race.
